I've been absent from LJ in general, and extremely absent from this account. I've mostly abandoned my first "main" account uglinessman
for personal reasons (if you're on my f-list, you probably know the details already), but I still haven't decided if I'm going to abandon this one and start a new one for icons. So until I decide, here's a couple of quickies:
This first is from a recently added T-Shirt Hell
shirt, and the second is from the April 11, 2009 Dilbert strip. Both are simple edits, no credit to me is required. Credit for first should go to tshirthell.com, and for the second dilbert.com and/or Scott Adams.
PS. I've lost my password for the email account I have associated with this LJ, so there's a good chance I won't know about any responses to any posts here unless I happen to check in, which I may or may not.

|icon and announcements
First, an icon inspired by a Non Sequitur strip:
Unfortunately, I can't provide a link to the strip because it's over a year old and therefore not legally available on the web (I saw it in my Non Sequitur page-a-day calendar on Monday).
The first announcement is regarding this journal specifically, so it's probably no big deal to any of you, but I should mention it anyway. I've finally decided to get off my ass and utilize LJ's Scrapbook feature. All of the icons I've ever posted here are now in my Scrapbook. Over the next week or so, I will be editing every post and changing the picture URL to those on the scrapbook. Part of the reason for this is that some of the pics are currently being hosted on Tinypic.com
, and while Tinypic URLs theoretically
don't expire, the fact is they sometimes do. Also, some of the others pics are hosted on multiple photobucket accounts, and it's hard to keep track of them. The only real reason I'm making an annoucement about this, however, is that I'd like you to let me know (by commenting to this post) if you see any broken images on this journal, so I can fix them ASAP.
And finally, I have created a new community. As many of you know, I like using simple tools to create simple icons, and I don't think there's enough support out there for folks like me. The account names "simple_icons" and "simpleicons" are both taken, but both appear to be blank. "basic_icons" and "basicicons" are both "deleted and purged" accounts (what's the bloody point of purging if you can't use them?). After going through a few ideas, with the help of enlisted_smile
, I eventually decided on modesticons
. Membership is currently open. You don't have to be active to be a member, but if you do want to post, I ask that you concentrate on posting icons you've made yourself. Other types of posts such as requests are fine for now, but we'll wait and see if any more specific rules need to be drawn up.

A comment to recent post
in the icanhaschzbrgr
feed inspired this small, basic set.
base: ( Read more...Collapse )
Credit for the first probably isn't necessary since they don't know who took the picture, but mentioning icanhascheezburger.com in the notes would probably be a good idea. For the other 4, since I added text, credit to ugli_icons
(in addtion to a mention of icanhascheezburger.com) is appreciated, but not really necessary.

|it's still a daisy age...
Over on my personal journal I have all 104 icons slots filled, and I'm about to do some cleaning. I'm going to get rid of these two that I made, and I realized that I don't have them posted anywhere else, so I figured I should archive them here before they disappear.
I had them in my gallery because I'm proud of how they turned out, and how much effort went into them (I drew all the frames by hand and scanned them), but the truth is I hardly ever use them.

Your inner child will cry, but your outer adult can't help but chuckle.
Don't bother crediting me, it's just a simple crop/resize job based on this shirt
, so please credit tshirthell.com

Many months ago, I heard a kids joke that I thought was pretty funny:
Q: What did the zero say to the eight?
A: Hey, nice belt!
And the other day I decided to turn the idea into an icon... but when I tell the joke to people, I change it to a D and a B because some fonts have a line through the zero, so I made that into an icon, too... then for some reason I got the idea for another one with two symbols talking, but totally unrelated to the original joke. And since I make all my stuff using MS Paint, these particular icons were way too pixelly for my taste, so a guy known as tommygavin from an IRC chan and Bit Torrent community I'm a member of cleaned them up for me...

Two from today's comic strips...
The first one is just a crop/edit/resize from today's Pooch Café
. Please credit Paul Gilligan, not me.
The picture in second one is taken from today's totally bizarre Dilbert
. I cropped and resized, and edited in new text to make it a Rejected reference. Seriously, I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Rejected when I saw this guy's spoon, right? Anyway, if you use that one, please credit Scott Adams and

Okay, here's the deal... every once in awhile I get an idea for a basic, generic icon. It's basic, it's generic, but for some reason I don't have it, and I haven't actually seen it. My only guess is that it's so basic and generic, that people just don't bother taking the time to make it, figuring they'll get around to it some other time. So I decided, screw it, I'm gonna make a batch. No credit for these is necessary, but if you feel like crediting ugli_icons
, that's fine.

was just too perfect for iconification...
Usual comic strip icon rules apply, credit to me is not necessary, please credit the artist (Tom Armstrong), and use the word "Marvin" in your keywords.

Silly thing I though of yesterday, finally decided to make into an icon today:
Harry Potter reference, with specific reference to a famous HP-related icon regarding the death of a certain character.edit:
typo fixed... that'll be the last time I make an icon while stoned...

Sometimes Mutts is a goldmine for icon material, and all three panels of Tuesday's strip
seemed to me like they could make decent individual icons, for a variety of different contexts outside the strip itself...
(my usual comic strip icon rules apply, credit the source material, but you don't have to credit me)

Inspired by today's kittenbreak
...and the animated extention of the third one:
I created all frames in Paint, animated with GifAnimation, and happysteve
compressed my 134KB mess to a manageable 35KB.edit:
Not knowing that someone had already compressed it for me, someone on another forum made a different compressed version. They look pretty much the same, but this second one seems smoother and less pixelly to me. It might just be my imagination, but just in case I'm presenting both versions in case anyone has a preference.
